Public Transport in Turin

Turin has a dense network of buses, trams and a metro (Line M1). The Torino+Piemonte Card itself does not include free public transport, but offers discounts: cardholders can purchase a 48-hour or 72-hour ticket for public transport at a special price (only available at tourist information centers). This ticket is valid from first validation for the corresponding duration and allows unlimited bus, tram and metro journeys within the city area and surrounding region. Journeys outside the city (e.g. to other places in Piedmont) are not covered. Additionally, with the card you receive discounts on special tourist lines, such as the panoramic lift in the Mole Antonelliana, the historic Sassi-Superga rack railway and the Venaria Express shuttle bus to Venaria Palace (weekends). The airport bus from Turin-Caselle to the city center is also discounted for cardholders.

Practical Use

Here's how to use the card and public transport step by step:

  1. Get the Torino+Piemonte Card: Buy the card online as a QR code or on-site (e.g. tourist information at Piazza Castello). Choose the validity period (24-120 hours) to match your stay.
  2. Get a public transport ticket: With a valid card, you can buy a 48h ticket (€7) or 72h ticket (€9) for public transport at the tourist information center. Take the ticket (paper or chip card) with you on your journeys.
  3. Validation at start: When using it for the first time, you must validate the ticket. Board the bus or tram and insert the ticket into the validator or hold it against the card reader. In the metro, use the ticket to pass through the turnstiles. Tip: To be safe, validate your time ticket on every journey at the reader to ensure it's registered as valid.
  4. Inspection: During ticket inspections, simply show your validated 48h/72h ticket. There's no need to additionally show the Torino+Piemonte Card (it was only needed for the discounted purchase). Keep the ticket with you for the entire validity period.

Timetables and Public Transport App

For planning and real-time information, the official GTT app "TO Move" is recommended (free for Android and iOS). The app offers route planning, shows real-time departure times and current line schedules, and also enables the purchase of digital tickets. Alternatively, common apps (e.g. Google Maps, Moovit) are also helpful.
Operating hours:

  • Metro M1: Mon-Thu approx. 5:30-22:00; Fri/Sat until about 1:30 AM (last departure around 1:00 AM); Sun/holidays approx. 7:00-22:00. Late in the evening, buses (Line M1S) replace metro service.
  • Bus and tram: Most lines run approximately from 5:00 AM until midnight (varies by line). On weekends, special Night Buster night buses run on Saturday nights, Sunday nights and before holidays (approx. 10 lines from the center), which can be used with normal tickets/passes.

Important Lines for Tourists

  • Airport ⇄ Center: A direct airport bus (Arriva) connects Turin-Caselle Airport every 15-30 minutes with the city center. It stops at Porta Susa and Porta Nuova stations among others; journey time approx. 45 min. One-way ticket (~€7.50 single, with Torino Card ~€6.50).
  • Train stations & hubs: The main stations Porta Nuova and Porta Susa are centrally located and important interchange points. Both have access to Metro M1 as well as numerous tram and bus lines. From Porta Susa, you can reach the historic center (Piazza Castello) in just a few minutes with bus lines 13, 55 or 56.
  • Reggia di Venaria: The special Venaria Express runs to the baroque Venaria Reale Palace from Turin (40 min., stops include Piazza Castello). On weekends, Torino Card holders can buy discounted shuttle tickets on board. On weekdays or as an alternative, GTT city buses Line 11 and Line 72 run regularly to Venaria (approx. 30 min., valid with normal city ticket). From the final stop, it's a 10-minute walk to the Reggia.
  • Superga Basilica: Take tram line 15 from the center (e.g. Piazza Castello) to the final stop Sassi. From there, the historic rack railway starts up to the Superga Basilica, which offers a panoramic view over Turin. With the Torino+Piemonte Card, you get a fare discount on this mountain railway.
  • Historic tram line 7: On Sundays and holidays, line 7 operates with vintage trams in a circular route through the city center (start and end point: Piazza Castello). The round trip offers a leisurely city exploration on rails. A special fare applies to this tourist tram (approx. €2 per round trip), but Torino Card holders can get free or discounted tickets.
